Qualcomm Introduces Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 Chip

Qualcomm has introduced the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2, emphasizing its focus on delivering more realistic and detailed experiences. This new version builds upon the XR2 Gen 2, which was unveiled in September 2023, by offering support for up to 4.3K per eye resolution at 90 frames per second. Qualcomm claims that this enhancement allows for exceptionally clear visuals in applications such as room-scale screens, life-size overlays, and virtual desktops.

The Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 also boasts a 15% increase in GPU frequency and a 20% boost to CPU frequency. Additionally, it supports โ€œ12+โ€ concurrent cameras to facilitate hand and other body tracking functionalities.

Certain specifications remain consistent with the XR2 Gen 2, including features like 12ms full-color video see-through and Wi-Fi 7 support. The XR2 Gen 2 is currently utilized in the Meta Quest 3, which features a 2,064 x 2,208 screen. The Snapdragon XR lineup is designed for extended reality (XR) applications, with Qualcomm also offering an AR family targeted at smart glasses.

Qualcomm Collaborates with Samsung and Google on Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 Chip Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2

After announcing their partnership last February, Qualcomm reaffirmed that it is closely collaborating with Google and Samsung.

Inkang Song, the Vice President and Head of the Technology Strategy Team at Samsung Electronics, expressed enthusiasm, stating,

โ€œSamsung is thrilled to collaborate with Qualcomm Technologies and Google in revolutionizing the mobile industry once more. With Samsungโ€™s mobile expertise and our joint commitment, we aim to create the best-in-class XR experience for Galaxy users.โ€

Shahram Izadi, the Vice President of AR at Google, also shared his excitement, saying,

โ€œWe look forward to continuing our collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies and Samsung on the future of immersive and spatial XR. Weโ€™re excited for the Android ecosystem to take advantage of Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2โ€™s capabilities and enable new experiences.โ€

Qualcomm has reported that โ€œ5+ OEMsโ€ are currently developing devices powered by its new chip. This list includes the upcoming headsets from Samsung and Google. Other partners mentioned today encompass HTC Vive, Immersed, and Play for Dream (formerly YVR). Additionally, Qualcomm has collaborated with Goertek to create a reference device, as depicted below.
