Nokia G42 gets Android 14 in India

As we mentioned when we discussed Motorola’s intentions regarding updates to Android 14, we’ll say it again – there are some Android device makers who are very good at issuing updates (Google and Samsung come to mind), and there are some like Motorola and HMD Global.

The latter has finally started pushing Android 14 today to the Nokia G42, which was announced last June. This is the first HMD device to receive the new OS version launched by Google many months ago, and hopefully it won’t be the last – although HMD hasn’t yet published a list of eligible phones.

It seems like the rollout has commenced in India only. The update arrives as a 2.68GB over-the-air download, so make sure you’re grabbing it over a network that’s reliable enough and fast enough. Once you’ve installed the update, you’ll be on software version V2.160, and you’ll have the December 2023 security patch level.

As always with such rollouts, keep in mind that a batched distribution is likely, so if you have a G42 bought from India, it might not have popped up the notification yet. Now that the rollout is underway, it should only be a matter of days, however. Then we’re hoping more countries will get it.

Recently both the Nokia G60 and the Nokia X30 were spotted on Geekbench running Android 14, so HMD Global is clearly testing the release for those. Perhaps this means they will be next in line.
