The initial launch of Samsung’s first foldable phone was a bit of a disaster. Early reviewers were quick to discover the various durability issues with the phone, ultimately creating the narrative that foldable phones aren’t quite as durable compared to their traditional smartphone counterparts.
To their credit, Samsung has made various efforts over the years to improve on its durability, and now it seems that the company’s next-gen foldables will come with even better durability. According to a trademark filing spotted on the Korean Intellectual Property Rights Information Service page, Samsung has filed for a trademark for the name “Ironflex”.
This sounds like a marketing name and according to the filing’s description, it seems that it will be used for foldable display panels used in phones, tablets, and wearables, although we think that this is just for Samsung to cover their bases. The filing doesn’t really tell us what exactly “Ironflex” is, but the name itself does sound “tough”.
Perhaps it could be used to refer to the actual display technology itself, where Samsung has figured out a way to use more durable materials. It could also potentially be used to refer to a new hinge design that is “tough as iron”, who knows? Either way, with the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Flip 6 expected to launch later this year, hopefully we’ll have more details then.
